What this hexagram is about
The breath of Heaven and Earth meet and mingle, rising and descending — the image of a time when all flows freely and well. When high and low are of one heart and inner and outer are joined, one must all the more know how to preserve and restrain it: foresee danger in times of safety, and so hold fast to this peace.
The Judgment
The small departs, the great comes. Good fortune and success.
The Image
Heaven and earth unite; so the ruler shapes and completes their course, aids what is fitting in them, and so guides the people.
Commentary on the Lines
Pulling up the reed brings good fortune in going forth — the will is set on what lies beyond.
The Six Lines (hover over the figure above)
Six at the top
The city wall crumbles back into the moat. Now is no time to call up the troops; one can only issue orders within one's own town, struggling to hold on — and even so, to keep to this brings regret.
Six in the fifth place
Di Yi gives his daughter in marriage — the sovereign stooping to wed below, the high humbling itself to the low; from this comes blessing, and the highest good fortune.
Six in the fourth place
Lightly, gracefully one comes down; without leaning on wealth one is close to the neighbors, and without need of warning all keep faith with one another.
Nine in the third place
No plain stays level without a slope, nothing departs without returning; in hard straits, hold to what is right and there is no fault. Do not fret whether your sincerity is recognized — rest content within it, and blessing is there of itself.
Nine in the second place
To embrace the rough and untended, to have the courage to ford the river on foot, to abandon none who are distant yet form no private faction — this accords with the way of balance and rectitude.
Initial Nine
Pull up the reed and its roots come tangled along — like draws to like, and they set out together; to go forward brings good fortune.
