What this hexagram is about
Wind above and wind below, entering at every crack — the image of yielding and of quiet penetration. Act with a yielding gentleness, make your intent plain again and again, and let it work its way in unseen; yet too much submission loses one's own mind.
The Judgment
Modest success. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. It is favorable to see the great person.
The Image
Wind following upon wind; so the noble person makes his commands plain and carries out his work.
Commentary on the Lines
Advancing and retreating — the will is in doubt. 'Favorable is the perseverance of a warrior' — the will is brought to order.
The Six Lines (hover over the figure above)
Six at the top
Yielding and bowed to the point of crouching beneath the couch — submission carried past all measure, the firm power of decision lost — one loses even the means and tools of a living; to keep to this brings misfortune.
Nine in the fifth place
Hold to the right, and good fortune; remorse fades, and nothing is unfavorable. The start may not go smoothly, yet the end comes out well; in acting, weigh things carefully before and after the change — as one plans three days before the turn and three days after — good fortune.
Nine in the fourth place
Remorse fades; like a great hunt richly taken, all three kinds of game secured — yielding rightly applied, the deed has its result.
Six in the third place
To force out, over and over, a show of compliance — submission not from the heart, repeated and contrived — there is cause for regret.
Nine in the second place
Yielding and humble to the point of crouching beneath the couch — bowed low, seeking the spirits through diviner and priest; leaning on their sincerity to reach the unseen brings good fortune and no fault.
Initial Nine
Hesitant and unsettled, advancing then drawing back; here it is fitting to take after the soldier's decisive firmness and hold to the right — shedding one's irresolution.
