小畜

Small Taming
Hexagram 9 · 小畜 Xiǎo Chù · Wind over Heaven
Six at the top既雨既处,尚德载,妇贞厉。 The rain has fallen and matters rest for now — the fruit of nurturing virtue brought to fullness; yet for the wife to cling stubbornly to her course now would itself turn to danger. The moon is near full — and fullness turns toward decline; for the wise to press rashly forward at such a time would bring misfortune.
Nine in the fifth place有孚挛如,富以其邻。Bound together in sincerity, one is able to share one's wealth with the neighbors.
Nine in the fourth place有孚,血去惕出,无咎。Holding sincerity in the heart dispels the bloody peril and drives off fear and dread; there is no fault.
Nine in the third place舆说辐,夫妻反目。The spokes spring from the wheel and the cart cannot move — like husband and wife at odds, neither giving way.
Nine in the second place牵复,吉。Drawn along, one returns together to the right way — good fortune.
To return along the proper path — how could there be fault in that? Good fortune.
When strength is small, hold back; build the great from many small things.

What this hexagram is about

The wind moves across the heavens — the image of small gathering, of strength held in check for a time by gentle force. Power is not yet equal to great undertakings; nurture the firm through the yielding, build up and bide your time, and first make sure of small things.

The Judgment

Success. Dense clouds, yet no rain, drifting up from my western fields.

The Image

Wind drives across the sky; so the noble person refines the grace of his culture.

Commentary on the Lines

Returning by one's own path — by its very rightness, good fortune.
