What this hexagram is about
Wind moving over the earth, looking upon all things — the image of contemplation and example. One looks out upon the world and examines oneself, while setting a model for those below to behold; the heart of it is to make oneself upright.
The Judgment 卦辞
观，盥而不荐，有孚颙若。
The hands washed, the offering not yet made; in sincerity, all look up in reverence.
The Image 大象传
《象》曰：风行地上，观；先王以省方观民设教。
Wind moves over the earth; so the ancient kings surveyed the regions, observed the people, and set forth their teaching.
Commentary on the Lines 小象传
初六童观，小人道也。
The childish, shallow view at the start — this is the way of the petty.
The Six Lines (hover over the figure above)
Six at the top观其生，君子无咎。
To observe others while being looked up to by the many; the noble person who keeps watch over himself in this is without fault.
Nine in the fifth place观我生，君子无咎。
To examine one's own words and deeds; the noble person who can turn thus upon himself is without fault.
Nine in the fourth place观国之光，利用宾于王。
To look up to the splendor and culture of a realm; it is fitting to be the sovereign's guest and to take office in his service.
Six in the third place观我生，进退。
To examine one's own words and deeds, and by them decide whether to advance or withdraw.
Six in the second place窥观，利女贞。
To peep through the crack of the door — a narrow, partial view; this serves only the steadfastness fitting to a woman.
Initial Six童观，小人无咎，君子吝。
To look on with the shallow eyes of a child: in a common person this passes without fault, but in the noble person such a view is a cause for regret.
