What this hexagram is about
Heaven held within the mountain — the image of great gathering. It speaks of storing much and releasing it slowly: nurture one's gifts through firm, sincere virtue, enrich oneself with the words and deeds of the worthies of old, and only when fully stocked move greatly.
The Judgment 卦辞
大畜，利贞。不家食吉，利涉大川。
Favorable to persevere. Not eating at home brings good fortune. It is favorable to cross the great river.
The Image 大象传
《象》曰：天在山中，大畜；君子以多识前言往行，以畜其德。
Heaven held within the mountain; so the noble person learns much of the words and deeds of old, and so stores up his virtue.
Commentary on the Lines 小象传
有厉利已，不犯灾也。
Danger near, it is well to halt — and so avoid calamity.
The Six Lines (hover over the figure above)
Six at the top何天之衢，亨。
To take up the open highway of Heaven — the gathering at its fullness now flows through, the road ahead broad and clear; success.
Six in the fifth place豮豕之牙，吉。
To draw the tusks of the boar and tame its fierceness — curbing the hard with the gentle, restraining it well — good fortune.
Nine in the fourth place童牛之牿，元吉。
To fix the guard-board on the young bull's horns early, before the trouble can form — the highest good fortune.
Nine in the third place良马逐，利艰贞。曰闲舆卫，利有攸往。
Fine horses gallop side by side in eager pursuit; it is fitting to hold to what is right amid hardship. Practice daily the arts of driving and defense, and then it is fitting to have somewhere to go.
Nine in the second place舆说輹。
The axle springs from the cart and it cannot move — held back, biding the time.
Initial Nine有厉，利已。
To go forward holds danger; it is fitting to stop and hold still for now.
