What this hexagram is about
Fire above and lake below, moving apart from each other — the image of estrangement and opposition. Amid difference and discord, seek common ground while allowing for divergence: in small things one may succeed, but to force agreement only breeds rifts.
The Judgment 卦辞
睽，小事吉。
In small matters, good fortune.
The Image 大象传
《象》曰：上火下泽，睽；君子以同而异。
Fire above, lake below, turning apart; so the noble person stays at one with others while keeping his own distinctness.
Commentary on the Lines 小象传
见恶人，以辟咎也。
Meeting even the ill-natured — and so avoiding fault.

Nine at the top睽孤，见豕负涂，载鬼一车，先张之弧，后说之弧，匪寇婚媾，往遇雨则吉。
Estrangement at its extreme breeds suspicion: one sees a pig caked with mud on its back, and a cart that seems laden with demons; one first bends the bow to shoot, then lays it down again — for the other is no robber, but a suitor come to ask for marriage. Go forward, and should the dissolving rain fall, it turns to good fortune.
Six in the fifth place悔亡，厥宗噬肤，往何咎。
Remorse fades; kin draw close and unite, easily as biting through tender flesh — where, in going forward, could there be fault?
Nine in the fourth place睽孤，遇元夫，交孚，厉无咎。
In estrangement and isolation, one meets a good and like-minded companion, and the two join in sincerity; though there is danger, there can be no fault.
Nine in the third place见舆曳，其牛掣，其人天且劓，无初有终。
One sees the cart dragged and held back, the ox that pulls it checked and reined, and the driver branded on the brow and shorn of his nose; the way is hard at first, but comes in the end to a good outcome.
Nine in the second place遇主于巷，无咎。
To meet one's lord unlooked-for in a lane — finding, amid estrangement, the one who answers to oneself — there is no fault.
Initial Six悔亡，丧马勿逐自复，见恶人无咎。
Remorse fades; do not chase the lost horse — it returns of itself; and meeting one who seems hateful, deal with him in good faith, and there is no fault — for in a time of discord, one should bear with others.
